So I got the external mic working on my go pro. Just a cheap ~$10 lapel mic. In this video it's taped right next to the tailpipe

Uploading another video with the mic by the intake soon. What do you think?

Not bad but not great. Now that you know it works you should spend more on a better mic.

Did you have to get an adapter from Mini-A USB to 3.5mm aux?

Yes. I bought the official gopro one for $10 on amazon. I had ordered a cheap one with the mic but it didn't work

Oh indeed, GoPro internal mics suck for sure. That being said, I'm sure if you spent double, triple, or even more for what you paid for that 10 dollar mic you could get some pretty sweet sound without breaking the bank.
